Welcome to the first newsletter of Stay Grounded! Many thanks to all those who have joined us recently – and to all of you who have been supporting a reduction of aviation and climate justice for longer. 

The world has changed over these last weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic throwing all our best laid plans up in the air. Globally, most aircraft are grounded for the time being. However, the aviation industry is already preparing for the time after the corona crisis, demanding billions in bailouts from taxpayers' money and trying to water down social and environmental regulations. We are fighting back against this with our latest campaign #SavePeopleNotPlanes. 

In this newsletter you will find details on the campaign, an update from the Stay Grounded Network, our new report "Degrowth of Aviation", Stay Grounded in the media, as well as news articles about the aviation industry and its future.

80,000 already say "Save people, not planes!"

Since the beginning of April our campaign #SavePeopleNotPlanes against unconditional bailouts for the airline industry is running. It is already supported by more than 340 organisations as well as by more than 80.000 people worldwide and has attracted a lot of media attention. Our message has been delivered to decision-makers in countries all over Europe. Nevertheless, airlines around the world continue to negotiate with governments for state aid at the expense of taxpayers and the climate. Some horrendous deals worth billions have already been decided. Help us to put even more pressure and share the petition!

The Stay Grounded network has 158 member organisations as of today. We welcome our newest members 350.org Seattle and Korea Federation for Environmental Movements! Here you can find a list with all our members, and here our position paper.

Our Degrowth of Aviation report is more relevant than ever. In the current crisis, the majority of all planes are grounded – but how can a we achieve a sustainable reduction of aviation and its climate impact in a just way? Read the report.
