A Mayan organisation is travelling to three countries in Europe to spread knowledge of their community work and take part in a range of events. The U kúuchil K Ch’i’ibalo’on Community Centre, a member of the Stay on Earth network, will visit Spain, Germany and Sweden to share Mayan art and raise awareness of their worldview.
From 22 January to 12 February 2026, members of the Mayan community of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico will visit the cities of Valencia in Spain, Berlin in Germany and Stockholm in Sweden to share the community work they do in the central part of the state of Quintana Roo known as the Mayan masewal zone.
During this European tour, they will visit universities, museums and cultural centres where they will participate in forums, talks, art exhibitions and reflection sessions on issues relevant to Indigenous struggles against discrimination and structural racism under global political and economic systems. At these meetings, the Maya U kúuchil k Ch’i’ibalo’on Community Centre will present the Reflections Photographic Exhibition, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, a collection that represents the relationship between Maya women and the territory.
In the city of Valencia, they will participate in a talk at the Museum of Ethnology, where they will share their thoughts on the importance of preserving and disseminating the historical memory of peoples. In Stockholm, they will visit the Ethnographic Museum, where they will make a Mayan offering at the altar of the masewal cross, which has been in the museum since 1936 and belonged to the Mayan lieutenant Don Evaristo Sulub. In Berlin, they will meet with members of the Romani community who are part of the Amaro Drom organisation. They will also share their position on the upcoming International Tourism Fair in Madrid and the Berlin Tourism Fair.
This European tour is made possible thanks to partnerships with organisations such as Periferies, the Memnosyne Institute, the Assembly of Solidarity for Mexico, the Evaristo Sulub Foundation and the Permanecer en la Tierra network.
