Time to strategise! Join our conference!
From July 3 – 6 2025, social movements and people engaged in countering air traffic’s and tourism’s negative impacts will meet for a big conference. What can we do to win the battle against the escalating ecological and social crises?
We’ll have time to evaluate, discuss our strategies, and build relationships to empower, support and learn from each other. The conference will work without a flight taken. It will take place in person in Barcelona, with possibilities for online participation for parts of the program, and local hubs in India and Mexico.

Flight Free Australia: Choosing Your Next Holiday

https://events.humanitix.com/choosing-your-next-holidayThe ever-growing burden of tourism on people, places, and the atmosphere has exploded into view this year. Barcelona has seen AirBnB protests, Venice charges admission fees, while the industry pumps out 5 gigatons of pollution each year. Australian resorts are under-serviced, with housing pressures on worker and tourist alike. Packaged, fly-by-night “travel experiences” produce endless frustration.
So what if we abandon the bucket list traps in favour of more thoughtful travel, closer to home, or one place at a time? And what of the new possibilities when our “dream destination” is a world we’ve left better than the way we found it?
Aims:
Flight Free Australia’s upcoming panel discussion focuses on changing attitudes to tourism. It features grounded tourists who have experienced the charming small places they travel through, as well as their shock at overblown mass tourism destinations. They welcome a local researcher studying degrowth and the potential for Australian tourism, and they summarise the year in aviation greenwashing. 2024 saw a billion dollars set aside for fantastical aviation fuels, no targets for aviation emissions reduction from our federal government, and an airport expansion for Melbourne with no regard for our climate.
They aim to demonstrate how people can travel – and are travelling – without the massive carbon burden of aviation emissions. Beyond this, we want to show how we can walk more lightly on local places, and what a truly sustainable model of tourism might look like.

Aviation & Climate Justice Training

The #SaveMaldives Campaign and Stay Grounded are hosting this introductory Tipping Point training which explains why a halt on airport expansion and a global reduction of aviation are crucial for climate justice.
Humay Abdulghafoor is a contributor to the #SaveMaldives Campaign, which is a citizen-led environmental campaign to increase public awareness of irreversible ecosystem and biodiversity destruction due to unsustainable development practices in the country.
The training will cover many aspects of the struggle from climate impact and inequalities to global solidarity, workers’ rights, false solutions and alternatives. You’ll also learn how to counter the industry’s greenwashed lies with new narratives and find out what you can do to support campaigns against airport expansion in the UK.
The training will take place online. Closed captions will be enabled and BSL can be arranged with enough notice. Email the training organisers [email protected] with any accessibility needs in advance or for any other questions. A link to sign into the event will be sent when you RSVP.

Webinar: How to set up a Frequent Flying Levy in Europe

New research, published in October 2024 by Stay Grounded, New Economics Foundation, Ecologistas en Acción and further organisations, proposes to implement a Frequent Flying Levy in Europe. This would raise €64bn without any cost to the majority of people. Aviation emissions would drop by 21%, mainly caused by just 5% of people flying less.
The webinar will explain the reasons and design of this new and fair aviation measure, and discuss with you how to make it a credible policy option in the EU and at country-level.
Speakers:
- Magdalena Heuwieser, co-founder of Stay Grounded and co-author of study
- Alex Chapman, senior economist at New Economics Foundation and co-author of study
- Xavier Labandeira, Professor for Economy at Vigo University
- Further speaker to be announced
Date: November 7th, 4-5.30 pm CET
Languages: English, Spanish & French (simultaneous interpretation)

Webinar: How to get greenwashing airline ads banned

Green Flying is an Illusion…and advertising that promotes “responsible” flying or so-called “sustainable” aviation fuels is misleading and illegal greenwashing.
Advertisements about “responsible” flying or so-called “sustainable” aviation fuels are one important way for the aviation industry to promote the illusion of green flying and mislead the public about their (missing) contribution to CO2 reduction goals. But this practice is increasingly being challenged. In March 2024 in a historic victory the Dutch court ruled against KLM airline that their marketing campaign was misleading for its claims over so-called “Sustainable” Aviation Fuel and offsetting. In April 2024, the European Commission together with national regulators sent letters to 20 airlines over their own misleading green claims giving them a deadline of 30 days to stop misleading claims and respond. And in the past few months and years we have witnessed several bans of misleading airline advertisements by national advertising watchdogs.
These are promising developments, but now we need to keep up the pressure on the regulators and the aviation industry.
In this hands on webinar we look at how each of us can fight individually or with their group against misleading greenwashing. We will hear from Hiske Arts vom Fossielvrij Netherlands about how they won their case against KLM and we will present our new toolkit with a lot of helpful resources for handing in complaints or writing to national regulators. There will be space for exchange and discussion based on concrete examples.

Climate justice and aviation – workshop for cultural organisations

Join an online workshop focusing on the intersection of climate justice and aviation, specifically tailored for cultural organisations. The session will help you think about how you can make decisions around flights and climate justice to work towards a climate-just world.
This workshop has been tailored by Creative Carbon Scotland (CCS) for cultural organisations. It is based on material from Stay Grounded, a global network of more than 200 member organisations including CCS, that aims to exchange experiences, support each other, and foster a reduction of aviation and its negative impacts on climate and health.
Michaela Leitner from Stay Grounded will provide her perspective throughout the presentation and there will be the opportunity to ask her questions. Michaela is Coordinator of European Campaign Partners and Multipliers with a focus on travel policies of organisations, she has an academic background in sociology and transdisciplinary sustainability research and is active in the climate justice movement in Austria.
The session, will also feature Ondine Oberlin from Imaginate, who will provide a case study about her experience from the Stay Grounded training and how it’s informed Imaginate’s approach to climate justice. She will also discuss their work on reduction of travel emissions, including how they’ve used carbon budgeting for travel.
International Training: Just Transition

Do you want to be part of a movement for a fair and green mobility, or boost campaigns on climate justice and aviation? Would you like to be part of a global network of campaigners and activists spreading the word?
Do you want to reflect on how we talk about aviation, refuting narratives that impede change?

In this workshop, we aim at making it easy for you and your group to plan an action around aviation, be it to target an airport or an industry event. Have you struggled to come up with plans for an effective action to resist a local airport conflict? Do you burst with the injustice caused by the super-rich who burn the planet with their private jets? Do you want to interrupt a business event with style? Join us and learn about targets, tactics and narratives you can use in your AviActions and discover inspiring actions and lessons learned from them.

Webinar – Private jets: Banning bullshit flights

For the past two years, the climate justice movement has put private jets on everyone’s radar, as obnoxious symbols of inequality and useless luxury emissions. Pressure has been growing to ban them: activists have been rallying up for bigger and bolder actions, from Schiphol to Code Rouge and the Make Them Pay campaign; proposals being debated by Governments; more and more of the ultra-rich being exposed for their scandalous luxury flights; and we’ve already seen a victory!!
With this webinar, we want to look at the actions that have been mounting up. We want to understand how to continue building pressure and what successful strategies that can lead us to actual victories can look like, and offer an opportunity for people to get involved. Lets join together to make flying on private jets and and other bullshit flights history!

Webinar: Join us in taking action against airline marketing!

Frustrated with seeing your local neighbourhood plastered in fossil advertising? Love coming up with creating actions? Want to know more about creative actions to “badvertise” the most annoying advert in your neighbourhood?
Then join this webinar, in collaboration with Badvertising, to get all the information you need to join an international week of action against airline advertising, sponsorship and greenwash. In the webinar we’ll talk about the role the advertising industry plays in driving demand for aviation and how you can get involved in the week of action against it. We’ll also be providing inspiration for some imaginative interventions!
Aviation adverts are everywhere in our streets and on social media while airlines sponsor our sports clubs and artistic institutions. Advertising normalises air travel with a superficial glamour that hides the true climate impacts of flying. This delays the system change we need for how we travel. At a time when we need to scale back air traffic movements, end all airport expansion and create a just transition for aviation workers, advertising continues to promote the expansion of an industry that has no credible plan for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s time to stop promoting our own self-destruction!
The week of action will take place on 15th – 22nd April 2024, find out more about it here.
Register for the webinar here:
Webinar: How frequent flyer programmes incentivize climate destruction

Join us to learn how you can help us ban Frequent Flyer Programmes (FFPs).
These schemes prop up the aviation industry’s deadly profit model, while rewarding the wealthiest in society for their luxury emissions – often with MORE free flights!
Now is the time to push this up the agenda, with the European election round the corner and with an open piece of legislation in the US connected to FFPs. Banning FFPs is a golden opportunity to disrupt the aviation industry in a socially just way.
Join our webinar on Monday 26th February at 5pm CET/11am EST.
Our discussion will include international experts on the topic from academia and activism:
- Alethea Warrington
- Larry Edwards
- Stefan Gössling
- Kimberly Nicholas

Webinar: The Injustice of Aviation
Did you know that…
· only 1% of the world’s population is responsible for 50% of climate-heating aviation emissions?
· the carbon footprint of one return flight from New York to London is nearly double the yearly total average footprint of a person living in India?
· in order to reach climate goals and achieve a just transition of the aviation sector, technological “fixes” won’t do the trick?
Then join our “Injustice of Aviation” Webinar taking place on Wednesday, 13th December, 17:00 – 18:00 CET!
In this webinar you will learn about why grounding aviation is such an important part of engaging for climate justice. You will receive the facts, numbers and arguments you need to communicate about the urgency to reduce flights and stay grounded. Based on our report, Common Destination, we will also share HOW you can talk about grounding flights and to counter the narratives of the aviation industry effectively.
This webinar is also a great preparation if you plan to join the mass action targeting aviation by Code Rouge on the weekend of 15th until 17th December!

If your answer is Yes, here is your opportunity to become a Stay Grounded multiplier!
In this module, we will unveil the illusions the aviation industry creates to make us think that green, sustainable flights are possible. We will discuss and reflect on greenwashing strategies in general and dive into the limits, possibilities and false promises of agrofuels, e-fuels, electric flights and offsetting – “false solutions” that distract us from the urgent need to reduce flights. After this module, you will be able to counter the aviation industry’s arguments of “sustainable aviation”.

Webinar: Airports and tourism development: another face of extractivism in the African continent

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Sep 25 2023
- Time: 7:30 am - 9:30 am
– Analysing the prospect of expanding the Kasese Airfield into an international airport along with three others in Uganda and its implications for local communities, environmental conservation and the climate crisis –
The planned expansion of the Kasese Airfield in Uganda into a fully-fledged international airport is one of four proposed airport expansion projects aimed at boosting tourism in the country. The proposed expansion of the Kasese Airfield will impose negative impacts on local communities, particularly women in all their diversities, and wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is in close proximity to the airstrip. Families in the vicinity have been forced to move and government compensation, when exists, is insufficient to buy equivalent land plots. The airport’s encroachment into the national park is set to cause further disturbances, exacerbating the risk of deadly human-wildlife interactions. The communities that will be affected by this expansion project and further consequences of tourism development in the area are already bearing the consequences of climate catastrophes such as annual flooding devastating the Kasese municipality.
To understand the drivers and implications of the Kasese airport expansion plan, we will look at how infrastructure development – such as airports – in Africa and elsewhere pave the way for many forms of extractivism, including those of tourism; and how such projects fuel gender-based and other human rights abuses and exacerbate the climate crisis, contributing to the devastation of ecosystems and putting human and non-human lives at risk. To raise awareness on the impacts of airports on communities as well as to learn successful strategies to oppose these projects, we will listen to testimonies from those willing to share their stories of past and ongoing airport-related injustices and resistance cases. We hope to gather knowledge and inspiration that can support Kasese’s communities in their struggle for justice and respect for their right to their lands and livelihoods.
Speakers:
Kwami Kpondzo is based in Togo and is African Coordinator and Coordinator of Extractive industries, Tourism and Infrastructures campaing at Global Forest Coalition.
Gabriela Vega Tellez lives in Texcoco in Mexico and is part of Coordinadora de Pueblos y Organizaciones del Oriente del Estado de México (in english, Coordinator of Peoples and Organisations of Eastern Mexico State), an organisation that has been actively involved in the resistance against the expansion of aviation in Mexico.
Edwin Mumbere lives in Uganda and is young environmental economist coordinating the Ugandan organisation Centre for Citizens Conserving Environment (CECIC) that has been vocal in denouncing the proposed expansion of the Kasese Airfield.

Webinar: Aviation and Subsidies in the EU

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Sep 14 2023
- Time: 2:00 am - 3:30 am
Join Umanotera and Stay Grounded for our joint webinar on Aviation and Subsidies in the EU, to explore together existing aviation subsidies and how to tackle them!
Aviation growth needs to be limited and reversed in order to avoid climate breakdown. Besides caps and limits, a common way to influence aviation (de)growth is via economic (dis)incentives. For decades aviation growth has been fuelled by various direct and indirect subsidies, including the whole chain from aircraft R&D and manufacture to airports, airlines, and air travel.
In this webinar we will give a conceptual overview of subsidies for the aviation sector, will discuss EU-level subsidies, and then dive into national-level subsidies in this field and discuss strategies on how to address and remove them. Special attention will be given to subsidies in Central and Eastern European countries, since the webinar will be co-organised with several NGOs from CEE who collaborate on the project ‘Towards a climate neutral EU: efficient allocation of EU funds‘.
Provisional agenda:
- Introduction from Stay Grounded and Umanotera – 10 min
- Overview: subsidies in aviation – European level – 10 min
- Overview: subsidies in aviation – National level – 10 min
- Aviation and EU funding – Examples from Central and Eastern European countries – 20 min
- Moderated discussion: National contexts and strategies to reduce and abolish aviation subsidies – 40 min

According to figures provided by United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), in spite of temporary slowdowns like the 2009 economic crisis or the 2020-2021 pandemic, international tourism keeps increasing around the globe. First, this raises a wide array of issues around social justice, ecological impacts (including, but not limited to climate change), intercultural impacts, gentrification and colonial structures, to name the best-known ones.
Nevertheless, more and more people are nevertheless engaging in international travel for a number of reasons that cannot be explained by marketing alone. In Europe travelling during the school holidays has become something that many treat as inevitable or non-negotiable, and in many other regions being a well-travelled person is regarded as a status sign (symbolic capital).
The 2020 lockdown seemed to exacerbate this desire to see the world (outside) and, more often than not, this means getting on a plane to travel to relatively distant places in a short time. The fake flights in Taiwan airport may be taken as proof of these sort of “withdrawal symptoms”. Yet, we should not disregard that to travel has often be regarded as a possibility to expand one’s horizons and to grow as a human being.
In this webinar we aim to address the intersection of these premises with questions such as: do we need to travel far to have a significant experience? How do we frame the desire to keep travelling from a human perspective, in spite of all its undesired effects? Why is it so hard to stop travelling to faraway destinations, either for leisure or for business, when alternatives exist?
In addressing these dynamics, we will also consider ideas including proximity travel and the subsidiarity principle. Proximity travel refers to touring nearer to home and subsidiarity prioritises narrower travel circuits in order to reduce tourism’s contribution to climate change and allow local areas to thrive through localised tourism. We explore these ideas for the degrowth of the travel industry while keeping in mind what a climate-just mobility system would look like.
Speakers:
Neus Crous Costa is a lecturer (University of Girona) and researcher in the fields of tourism as personal development, heritage management, cooperation and regenerative culture. She has participated in educational and social volunteering and in recent times has become active in ecological activism.
Freya Higgins-Desbiolles is an academic (University of South Australia) and an activist (Tourism Alert and Action Forum). Her work focuses on just and ecologically sustainable tourism. She is the co-editor of the two recent books Socialising Tourism: Rethinking Tourism for Social and Ecological Justice (2022) & The Local Turn in Tourism: Empowering Communities (2023).

Did you know that…
- only 1% of the world population is responsible for 50% of climate-heating aviation emissions?
- the carbon footprint of one return flight from New York to London is nearly the double of the yearly total average footprint of a person living in India?
- in order to reach climate goals and achieve a just transition of the aviation sector, technological “fixes” won’t do the trick?
Do you want to know more?
Then join our “Green means Grounded!” Webinar Series taking place in June!
In this workshop you will learn about why reducing aviation is so closely linked to questions of climate justice. You will learn about facts, numbers and arguments that show the urgency – in our world in climate crisis – of reducing flights and staying grounded.
You will also learn about concrete steps to take and best practices that show you how to reduce flights at the institutional level. Business flights are a big part of many organisations’ carbon footprints and work to normalise excessive flying. This is why it is time to ground our organisations! If you are you part of a university, NGO or business that just need a little input to reflect on and change their travel practices, this workshop is the right one for you.

For the past few months, the climate justice movement has put private jets on everyone’s radar, as obnoxious symbols of inequality and useless luxury emissions. Pressure has been growing to ban them: activists have been rallying up for bigger and bolder actions, from Schiphol to the Make Them Pay campaign; proposals being debated by Governments; more and more of the ultra-rich being exposed for their scandalous luxury flights; and we’ve already seen a victory!!
With this webinar, we want to look at the actions that have been mounting up and the policy opportunities that are coming up to ban private jets. We want to understand how to continue building pressure and what successful strategies that can lead us to actual victories can look like, and offer an opportunity for people to get involved. Lets join together to make flying on private jets and and other bullshit flights history!

The Brunels changed the way we travelled forever. Marc Brunel designed the worlds first tunelling shield laying the foundation for future tunnelling projects like Js2, Crossrail and the Channel tunnel. His son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel who learnt his craft on the Thames Tunnel project designed train lines that continue to cross cross the country today, and imagined a train that would take you from London to New York.
Today we need to fundamentally change the way we travel once more to tackle the worst effects of climate disaster.

Demonstration on the occasion of the major private aviation exhibition at Palexpo (Geneva)
Tuesday 23rd May 2023

Aviation is the most polluting mode of transport
1% of people are responsible for half of the emissions from the aviation sector. Nothing symbolises this injustice better than private jets, which emit 5 to 14 times more CO2 per passenger than a commercial flight.
In 2022: Record number of private jets in the world
The global private jet fleet has more than doubled in 20 years and the number of flights has reached a record high in 2022 with 5.3 million flights worldwide. Since the beginning of the pandemic, emissions from private jets have increased by more than 23%!
A growing climate scandal
After the Twitter accounts tracking the jets of the hyper-rich, after the debates in the French Parliament on their ban, after the decision of Amsterdam airport to put an end to private jets, the debate on the legitimacy of this mode of transport in a world in the throes of a climate catastrophe has never been so hot.
Geneva: a popular destination for jets
Europe’s largest private aviation exhibition* will be held from 23 to 25 May at Palexpo. Each year, the event brings together more than 12,000 people and 400 exhibitors who come to present the latest models of jets with a lot of greenwashing. Geneva airport is one of the main hubs in Europe for private jets with 14,582 flights departing from Cointrin in 2022!
Private jets are incompatible with the respect of our climate commitments and the objective of carbon neutrality. Come and join us in denouncing this ultra-polluting mode of transport reserved for a privileged few, most often the hyper-rich, who are burning the planet.
We will meet at Les Cropettes at 4pm, from where we will leave by bike to reach Palexpo. Those who wish to come by public transport can come directly to the rally at 4.45pm in front of Palexpo!

Stay Grounded webinar: “Re-imagining Tourism in a Future with Less Air Traffic”

To participate in the webinar, please register here.
The advent of mass tourism is inextricably tied to the rise of commercial aviation. Since the 1960s, the constant growth of the tourism industry has accompanied the sustained increase of air traffic. Illustratively, the share of international tourists travelling by air has increased from 46% in 2000 to 59% in 2019 (UNWTO, 2021).
Despite mounting pressure to tackle air traffic’s contribution to global heating, the aviation and tourism industries are poised to continue growing and reinforcing their interdependence. Both industries refuse to recognise that cutting aviation’s GHG emissions requires cutting air traffic itself. Instead, they use the ‘job and wealth creation’, ‘development’ and ‘environmental conservation’ narratives to try to claim that the benefits of their business model justify the damage it causes.
But does (aviation-driven) tourism live up to its promise of delivering prosperity for people and planet? How did aviation and tourism become interdependent? Can they be decoupled? What opportunities are there for a tourist industry with drastically less air traffic? In our upcoming webinar, we will listen to perspectives from Republic Dominican and Spain to answer these questions to understand the current dynamics of both industries, and to explore future socially and ecologically just imaginaries of tourism in line with a steep and just reduction of aviation.
Guest-speakers
Giselle Cedeño – Graduate in Tourism and Hotel Business Administration from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (UASD), with a specialisation in Sustainability and Quality Management in Tourism Businesses, and she is a member and collaborator of Alba Sud. She writes about tourism(s), inequality and alternatives from the Dominican perspective.
Carlos Buj – Designer and facilitator of workshops and courses on ecosocial transformation. He has researched public policies to promote international tourism in Spain and founded the cooperative “Viaje a la Sostenibilidad”.

Workshop on February 16th : A Worker-Led Approach – Shaping the Future of Aviation

Workshop on February 16th : A Worker-Led Approach – Shaping the Future of Aviation
The aviation industry is currently facing big challenges to reduce its environmental impact.
Just recently, the European Transport Federation published the report “Landing Desirable Jobs” arguing strongly for a long-term sustainability perspective and a plan for decarbonisation led by the heart of the industry: its workers.
Aviation workers are speaking up and developing their own vision of the future for travel and the prospects for a worker-driven transformation of the sector.
We invite aviation sector employees to a conversation about their future and job security in a world of climate crisis. So-called Workers’ Assemblies (inspired by Citizen Assemblies) are one way of encouraging these conversations.
- Bring together aviation workers concerned about a sustainable future for the sector from different countries, companies and trade unions to share experiences and network
- Present and discuss the Aviation Workers’ Assembly concept
- Strategise on how our network can join together to make progress towards a worker-led transition plan for aviation in 2023

Was bedeutet Framing? Welche Aktionen transportieren unsere Botschaften? Was sind sinnvolle Kampagnenstrategien?

Module III – Just Transition of Aviation
The aviation industry is set to shrink and needs a “safe landing” – this means also we need a just transition for workers. But how can we counter the misleading ‘jobs hypocrisy’ by the aviation industry and governments? In this module, we will take a look into the future: What could a transition to a new, greener and socially just mobility system look like? And what do climate activists need to know to join forces with workers and trade unions?

Join the Subvertisers International network and Brandalism from the 10th – 17th September 2022 to stand up against airline and airport advertising. As Europe burns under an unprecedented heatwave, major polluters and their advertising agencies continue to promote and normalise high carbon lifestyles through carefully crafted adverts. Citizens, activists and artists around Europe will be taking action to call for a ban on advertising for fossil fuels, including ads for profiteering energy giants, airlines and massive status-symbol cars.
This is a broad call to action against advertising from big carbon polluters in which aviation is a key target – get involved doing whatever excites you or feels effective against ads for airports/airlines. This is timed to support the drive to gather signatures for the ECI petition to ban fossil fuel advertising. Actions can include: altering, replacing or removing corporate ads, hosting a community workshop, or organising a demonstration at an airport or advertising agency – whether your tactics are open or clandestine – get in on the action. A Toolkit for action can be found HERE with artwork available from early September.
For those in need of financial support to take action (e.g. printing subverts), you could consider applying for the Stay Grounded action pots.
Narratives for Change – Workshopreihe in Wien

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Sep 05 - 07 2022
Inhalte:
Workshop Teil III: Transformative Medienarbeit

Local Time

- Date: Jul 27 - 31 2022
Why protest against the airport expansion?
The action and protest alliance „Transform LEJ“ calls for actions against the expansion of Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) from July 28 – 31.
It is about all the injustices that are evident in the expansion of the airport:
• brutal deportations from Germany,
• greed for profit of DHL and Amazon aggravate climate change especially at the expense of people in the global south,
• exports of arms all over the world
• precarious working conditions for employees,
• aircraft noise and displacement of local residents
We will not allow DHL and the government to cast the capitalist growth mania in concrete with the expansion and fly us with even more cargo planes further and further into the climate crisis. Come with us: prevent the expansion and fight for the construction of a solidary society. We say: Transform LEJ!

Panel at Climate Justice Week in Dominican Republic: Airport Extractivist Model and Tourism

Local Time

20. July: 13:15 – 15:00 (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) // 19:15 – 21:00 (CEST)
This panel will be in Spanish with no translation.
Governments and corporations promote airports as a sign of progress and with promises of ‘development’. In reality, the construction of airports and associated infrastructure drives people off their land, destroys livelihoods, plunders water and fertile soil, and devastates ecosystems. Mexico and Republic Dominican are no exception, as airports are part of the extractivist model and open the door to more mega-projects like the development of tourism, leaving a trace of destruction behind while exploiting the land and its peoples.

Module II – Greenwashing in Aviation
In this module, we will unveil the illusions the aviation industry creates to make us think that green, sustainable flights are possible. We will discuss and reflect on greenwashing strategies in general and dive into the limits, possibilities and false promises of agrofuels, e-fuels, electric flights and offsetting – “false solutions” that distract us from the urgent need to reduce flights. After this module, you will be able to counter the aviation industry’s arguments of “sustainable aviation”.
All slots for the first round of the international training are filled. We might start another round in Autumn, if you are interested in joining please write an email to [email protected] and you will get an info-mail in case the application process reopens.

Policy Discussion: How to finally implement the Kerosene Tax?
It seems ridiculous, but it’s true: the fuel of the most polluting mode of transport isn’t taxed on international flights in almost any country. It never has been in the EU. The EU Fit for 55 climate package, published mid 2021, makes a proposal – the third in 20 years – to end this tax exemption for jet fuel. However, the proposal is not ambitious enough, and a unanimous vote of all EU member states in the EU Council would be needed to implement it.
Much pressure from civil society would be needed to achieve this, while it makes sense to simultaneously push for bilateral taxation schemes between member states which has been allowed since 2003 but never used.
What role does taxing have in the overall changes that need to happen to reduce aviation? Is it the bare minimum? Is it a major game-changer? How much focus should civil society put on it? Which could be good points of intervention for NGOs and activists?
After inputs from policy experts, we welcome you all to participate in an open discussion on best strategies and actions to take following this debate.

The catastrophic climate scenario that we are living in is the result of centuries of exploitation and oppression through colonialism, extractivism and capitalism, an essentially flawed socio-economic model which urgently needs to be replaced.
A system where rich nations are responsible for 92% of global emissions, and the richest 1% of the world population are responsible for double the pollution produced by the poorest 50%.
Guided by historical struggles and lived experiences, led by the most affected people and areas (MAPA), we are demanding climate reparations.

What we should know about false solutions and unmet promises
Webinar by Stay Grounded Network, Biofuelwatch and Global Forest Coalition

For decades we have witnessed massive growth rates in aviation without any meaningful attempt from neither industry nor government to deal with it’s damaging climate impact. The short pause through Covid was directly followed by massive and unconditional bailouts from governments. Now the sector is redoubling its efforts to promote “green solutions” for flying and justify it’s ongoing growth ambitions; just recently IATA and ATAG published a plan to reach “Net Zero” by 2050. But there is a lot that the aviation industry does not tell us. Most of their plans come much too late to reach climate targets. Besides, aircraft efficiency improvements, biofuels, e-fuels, hydrogen and electric flight have major obstacles and negative side effects, including being a distraction from the fact that we need strong cuts in emissions NOW.
But how can we counter such Greenwashing narratives?
In our new Fact Sheet Series presented in the webinar we look behind the green curtain of the industry’s promises and debunk common myths and misconceptions. The webinar will also present the findings of our new case study on Omega Green biofuel plantation, analyzing the largest private investment in the history of Paraguay, and the first advanced biofuel plant in Latin America. With expert scientists we will analyze current policies and models for reducing the climate impact of the aviation sector – identifying possible short-falls and weaknesses. We will end with looking at cross-cutting questions within the different “green solutions” of governments and industry and discuss how to react to them.
The webinar will be mainly in English with simultaneous translation into Spanish

- Date: Nov 08 2021
- Time: 12:00 am - 2:00 am
A COP26 Forum not to be missed, 5 eminent speakers from around the world assessing the impact and transformation a Just Transition can bring
About this event
The transition to a global zero emissions by 2050 will require transformational change beyond the energy sector. Workers whose jobs and livlihoods are tied to greenhouse gas emitting industries face uncertain futures as these industries go green. How do we ensure these workers and their communities are not left behind as the world responds to climate change?
We will only truly tackle the consequences of dirty energy and generate a meaningful transition to a cleaner, greener world when we generate sustainable jobs and opportunities for these people.
An inclusive social dialogue, a widely accepted community vision and a well-planned, inclusive just transition to a clean, green future are essential – we cannot leave anybody behind!
Objective: The objective of the forum is to demonstrate the opportunities that a just transition can bring to the workers in the affected sectors as well as the entire community and to present the tools and inspire actions that governments, businesses and civil society can take.

Stay Grounded Action Days against Greenwashing of Air Traffic

Stop Greenwashing – Reduce Air Traffic Now!
The climate emergency demands real solutions
As we‘re pushing harder for climate action, the aviation industry is reinforcing their greenwashing. Lobbyists and industry campaigns spotlight unlikely technological step-changes to legitimize their plan to jump back to pre-Covid growth levels.
But: Their promised “solutions” are flawed! Biofuels, e-fuels, electric flights, hydrogen as well as offsetting have obstacles and negative side effects. Worse even: the industry has never kept its promises. Even if their “solutions” were plausible, their effect on the climate would come too late and be eaten up by the over-expansion of the industry.
Climate science is clear about the urgency to cut emissions until 2030 – not “some time in the distant future”. Communities around the globe, especially those least responsible for the climate crisis, are already feeling the impacts – a commitment to climate justice requires that we wait no longer to enact real change.
There‘s no time for diversionary tactics! We need real solutions now. All flights but the very necessary ones need to be reduced. This means: finally tax aviation fuel, tax tickets (with a focus on long haul and business class), and shift short and middle haul flights to the rail. Progressive policies such as a frequent flyer levy are available to ensure the biggest polluters pay their fair share, and do not pass the burden on to those who hardly fly at all.
Call for Actions confronting Aviation Greenwashing
Join more than 15 actions taking place globally from Mexico, to Germany, from Nepal to the UK and France as well as many others pending confirmation.
Stay Grounded invites individuals and initiatives to get creative and do direct actions against greenwashing on November 5th and 6th – at your local airport, an airline headquarters, flight ads, etc. You can find inspirations from the Greenwash Guerrillas or at Actions-on-fossil-Ads.

Business travel by air nearly skidded to a standstill when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, with many US-based companies slashing their travel budgets in 2020 by 90 percent or more. The slow resumption of some business travel since has led some industry analysts to speculate that business travel will never rebound to pre-pandemic levels. Such a shift would advance efforts to address the climate crisis, given emissions from business travelers amount to the equivalent of burning nearly 10 billion gallons of gasoline each year. New research from WRI indicates that reduced business travel would offer a range of benefits for the climate, organizational budgets and employees’ well-being.
How are public and private organizations reimaging their business travel policies to meet their goals and achieve their sustainability objectives? What should businesses keep in mind when reevaluating their travel policies? And how can we ensure new policies benefit equity and inclusion efforts?

Aviation Conference Toulouse and Paris – 10 days to think about the future and act now

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Sep 16 - 17 2021
- Time: 10:00 pm
From 17 to 26 September 2021, the Association Notre Choix and the Pensons l’Aéronautique pour Demain (PAD) collective are joining forces to organize the Assises de l’aviation : https://www.assises-aviation.com
These Assises are an opportunity to address three hot topics of 2021: climate, employment and new travel! The principle? Devote 10 days to thinking about the future and acting now!
—————————
> Why a conference? 🧐
For several months, the debate has been raging between pro- and anti-aircraft on the future of the aeronautics sector. There are two opposing views: a saving technology or the necessary reduction in size.
But in all cases, the observation is the same: faced with global warming, the aeronautics sector must act and do its part to reduce its carbon emissions and pollution.
Another way (to conflicts?) is to work together to achieve these objectives.
This is what Notre Choix and the PAD collective have done. They have joined forces to propose alternatives and influence the public debate in a single event that will take place in Toulouse and Paris from 17 to 26 September 2021.
—————————
> On the programme? 🗓
During the weekends of 17-19 and 25-26 September, round tables, workshops and animations will be held: everything is accessible in person (with the exception of Covid). Some of the round tables will be broadcast live so that everyone can attend! We have selected experts who are happy to share their point of view: employees in the sector, scientists, NGOs, sociologists, committed citizens, etc.
In between the two weekends, we will organise replays and online workshops to reflect on the world of tomorrow!
📣 80 speakers // We have asked the greatest experts in aviation, sustainable tourism and climate issues to come and discuss with you during the 10 days of the conference!
🎙 16 Round Tables // We are drawing up a report and looking for solutions concerning the place that the aircraft occupies in the French industry and in the lives of citizens: from the impact on the sector’s employees to a reflection on travel and tourism in the world of tomorrow, not forgetting reflections on the climate, (almost) all subjects are covered!
🛠 5 Workshops // Are you looking for concrete actions? Not completely sure you understand the implications of global warming, or want to share your vision of tomorrow’s mobility? Take part in our workshops to exchange with the organisers!
💃 Animations // Of course we want you to stay with us all weekend long, so we’ve put together a lot of fun animations.
☀️ Forum // Because our partners are the best, we will be highlighting them and holding stands: come and meet them!

Green jobs and airport expansion

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: May 24 2021
- Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Join campaigners, researchers and trade unionists from the UK and Europe to discuss how to bring a jobs lens to anti-airport campaigning.
–> Register here!
About this event
Airports seeking expansion across Europe are subject to growing scrutiny and organised opposition in light of stricter climate targets. Supporters push back that they are engines of local employment. Meanwhile a huge wave of redundancies accompanies the ongoing pandemic restrictions. If it wasn’t obvious before, it is now: jobs are a critical element of our relationship to aviation.
A recent report on Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second largest, showed that at least 16,000 alternative green jobs could be created in the surrounding region via a Green New Deal. This event will hear from the authors of this report, trade unionists and local airport campaigners on how to challenge the local jobs case for airport expansion and make the case for a different route.
Speakers will include:
- Tahir Latif, former aviation group president of the UK trade union PCS, and co-author, ‘A Green New Deal for Gatwick’, which called for urgent investment in green jobs and retraining in the region surrounding the airport.
- Alex Chapman, a Senior Researcher at the New Economics Foundation, and author of recent analyses of the economic case for expansion at Leeds-Bradford and Bristol airports.
- Anne Kretzschmar, an organiser with the international Stay Grounded network, and co-author of its ‘Just Transition of Aviation’ discussion paper.
- Alethea Warrington, aviation campaign manager at the climate charity Possible.
This webinar will be hosted on Zoom, a link will be sent to all registered participants.

Lisbon: Mass Action of Civil Disobedience

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: May 21 - 22 2021
- Time: All Day
On May 22nd, we will meet in the Lisbon Airport to then march and block the roundabout “Rotunda do Relógio” putting our bodies on the frontline. We follow an Action Consensus and use the affinity groups and delegates’ plenary structures for self-organizing the action. Why?
Our house is on fire.
The system keeps failing. We’re ruled by a glaring mismanagement, leaving the people to stumble upon both the pandemic and climate crisis, protecting above all Capitalism and extractivist lobbies. Those who most needed help were left behind.
We are suffocating.
None of the crises – public health, economic, climate – can be solved while people and nature keep being employed as capital, solely serving the system and its segregating echoes.
Fear can provide fearlessness, distress can be a premonition of change and revolt.
This spring we’ll bloom the beginning of a new story, Our Story. We’ll flood the streets in an action of mass civil disobedience.
The Concept: Aviation on Fire
All around the world, the aviation sector not only collapsed but in fact collapsed on top of the workers while bailing out shareholders and the financial system attached to aviation.
In Portugal, in the nationalization of TAP Air Portugal, the government chose a restructuring of the company with layoffs and reduced salaries, instead of seizing this opportunity to launch a just transition plan for the sector that protects the rights and the incomes of the workers, provides training and jobs in sustainable mobility and hold the shareholders accountable. Such a plan could also include Groundforce and all the workers in the aviation sector.
At the same time, the government and Vinci had a proactive role in insisting in the new airport in Montijo, going as far as fast-track legislative changes to overcome administrative barriers that had effectively blocked the project.
Social and climate crises don’t just “happen”. They are brought about by the socio-economic system. Rushing for profits, corporations are burning the planet and the people. The government warrants the status quo, feeding the mortal flames we find ourselves in.
Our action is organized in three pillars:
1) Degrowth of Aviation
2) Just Transition
3) More Railways

Most flights are grounded due to Covid-19, posing enormous difficulties for workers in the sector. Yet, in order to effectively counter the climate crisis, aviation and mass-tourism need to be limited in the long-term. How could a transition process including job shifts be organised? What are obstacles and lessons learned from coal transitions?
– Magdalena Heuwieser, DE, Stay Grounded & Pablo Muñoz Nieto, ES, Ecologistas en Acción, presenting the “Just Transition of Aviation” discussion paper
– Eoin Coates, IE, Head of Aviation in the European Transport Workers Federation, about the long-term plan of trade unions for jobs in the aviation sector, and how a “just transition” is discussed internally
– Carlos Martínez, ES, member of the Secretary of Environment from CC.OO., on experiences with the coal transition in Spain, and on how the Spanish Union Confederation envisions a just transition for tourism and aviation
– Jonathan Essex, UK, presenting a concrete just transition plan for shifting jobs from Gatwick airport, called “Green New Deal for Gatwick”
– George H., UK, pilot, & Finlay Asher, UK, aviation engineer, from the aviation worker’s initiative “Safe Landing”, sharing their personal stories and presenting their ideas on a just transition.

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Mar 11 2021
- Time: 9:30 am - 11:30 am

co-organized by: Stay Grounded Network, ATERRA Portugal, MTST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Teto – houseless workers movement)
Stay Grounded (SG) is a global network with more than 160 member-organisations on all continents fighting for a climate just mobility system and for a degrowth of aviation. While Covid19 grounded most flights in 2020 and the aviation industry received billions of unconditional bailouts, the question of which flights are necessary and how to foster a just transition of the sector to #savepeoplenotplanes has become even more urgent. In this workshop, we will present the Stay Grounded Network and its proposals for a climate just transportation system and discuss why aviation is extremely problematic when it comes to climate and social justice. SG member ATERRA from Portugal will shed a light on the link between aviation (growth), the problems of mass tourism and the local impact of airport expansions. Tara Burke from MTST in Brazil (houseless workers movement) will give an input on the first steps that have been made to expand the network to Latin America and explain the support that is offered by the network.
Together with the participants we will explore the idea of a just transition in the aviation industry and related sectors and hopefully collect a diversity of thoughts and opinions from different areas of the world facing the problem of aviation and its local and global impacts.

Let us now listen to Gabriela.
This is the 20th anniversary of the creation of the World Social Forum (WSF) as a counterpart to the Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and against the Capitalist-Neoliberal System, which is why from January 23rd to 31st a Virtual Commemorative Forum will be held as part of the process towards its 14th face-to-face edition in Mexico 2022.
From the facilitation of the thematic space of Ancestral Original Peoples, we have been carrying out a series of Conversations and Meetings during 2019-2020 and that we will continue throughout 2021, to contribute to make visible the true situation that we suffer, having counted for it with the participation of peoples of the Abyanáhuac Continent or America and other parts of the world as well as with the collaboration of commentators; this effort has resulted in a document-synthesis which takes up thoughts, feelings and proposals summarized in the voices of the participating peoples and which we invite you to analyze collectively in a Dialogue Table in the Virtual Forum, which will be the basis of a consensus Declaration.
IN THIS VIRTUAL MEMORIAL FORUM 2021, LET’S MAKE POSSIBLE THE AGENCY OF THE PEOPLES IN THE STRUGGLE WHO ARE FACING THE HEALTH, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL CRISES IN THE WORLD; RESISTING and REBELLING AGAINST DISPLACEMENT, EXPLOITATION, DISCRIMINATION, RACISM and ALL FORMS OF WAR OF EXTERMINATION. Shifting towards climate-just transport and travel. Covid-19 changed a lot, including aviation, which was and still is almost grounded. On the one hand, there has been an increasing critical debate about aviation due to the escalating climate crisis and the pandemic, and there is a real window of opportunity to restructure our economy in a climate just way. On the other hand, we see a resurgence of greenwashing myths launched by the aviation industry and the unconditional willingness of politicians to return to business as usual without any clear concepts for a real just transition of our economy.
This session will present the paper “A Rapid and Just Transition in Aviation” which is the result of a collective discussion and writing process by workers in the sector, climate activists, trade unionists and academics, facilitated by Stay Grounded. We will share strategies on how ideas were generated, how we collaborated and possibilities for delivering the changes needed. The paper aims to propose a pathway and criteria for a just transition, pointing out contradictions and asking questions in order to spark discussion – eg. within this workshop and hopefully be one of many drivers for a real and just transition.

Webinar: Greenwashing and false solutions: biofuels, offsets, techno-fixes

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Nov 06 2020
- Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join us to talk about how airlines are greenwashing their activity and how we can counter it. We will cover illusory techno-fixes and offsetting; we will discuss the myth of sustainable aviation fuels and why the promotion of biofuels and waste-derived fuels by the aviation industry is a false climate solution which could lead to more deforestation and land grabs around the world. We’ll also explain why waste-derived aviation fuels are unlikely to work. We will talk about how international policy and carbon markets contribute to the problems, as well as examining the gender-differentiated impacts of these false solutions.
Speakers
- Alethea Warrington – Possible
- Almuth & Gary – Biofuelwatch
- Simone Lovera- Global Forest Coalition

Action against opening of new Berlin airport

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles

- Time: All Day
BER – Block it, End it, Recycle it
The penguins´ call to action in BERlin, Germany, from Oct. 30th to Nov. 1st. Organized by the German activist group “Am Boden bleiben”
It is hard to believe: In spite of the increasingly threatening climate crisis as well as ten years of failure, Berlin plans to open its new airport on October 31st. Air travel accounts for up to 10% of Germany’s climate impact already – caused by a small percentage of frequent flyers and an unjustly advantaged industry.
Block it: There will be a protest against the opening of BER with a mass action – determined, disobedient and with an appropriate hygiene-concept. Join the penguins from Oct. 30th-Nov. 1st in Berlin – because the coolest birds stay on the ground. It is not the goal to block individual passengers but to dismiss an unjust and climate-damaging industry.
End it: We will put BER on ice in support of a sky that stays blue even after corona-times, and prevent noise pollution as well as emissions from taking off again. The reduction of airports and air travel, particularly in the global North, has to go hand-in-hand with a radical change in economics, our ways of working and our lifestyles. If we fail to overcome this compulsively growing capitalism and its inherent hyper mobility, it will be impossible to take serious action against the climate crisis or to provide global social justice as well as freedom of mobility.
Recycle it: The building and area of the BER could easily be re-used as a community- and leisure center. It could also be repurposed as a “museum of fossil capitalism and outdated mobility”. The massive amount of tax money invested in the aviation industry – which benefits only a few – has to be redirected towards a climate-just mobility for everyone. The cost of BER adds up to around 6 billion euros, the Lufthansa company recently received a bailout of 9 billion euros, and the lack of a kerosene- and value added tax results in gains of approximately 13 billion euros for the airlines per year. Only a small number of companies and frequent flyers are profiting: In Germany, only 7% of the people are flying 10 times or more per year – predominantly wealthy people. The majority rarely or never takes the plane, and instead uses bikes and public transport on a daily basis. Come and join us in the struggle for a climate-just mobility for everyone!

In recent months, many of us became experts in using virtual communication in our work contexts. These learning experiences can be valuable in the future: remote collaborative international work is an effective way to reduce the need for business air travel. We would like to harvest those experiences and explore how they can help us to avoid business air travel in the long term – beyond the current phase of travel restrictions.
The first half of the webinar consists of three expert accounts providing an overview of the topic.
Lorenz Hilty (Department of Informatics, Informatics and Sustainability Research at the University of Zurich),
Stan Reimgen (Co-Founder & Design Lead of Big. An Impact Studio), and
Nicole Aeschbach (TdLab Geography at the Institute of Geography at Heidelberg University) will answer questions such as:
- How can virtual communication help to reduce the climate impact of organizations and be as little harmful to the climate as possible?
- What are the recommended technical solutions for collaborative work and workshops?
- How to design virtual meetings to be motivating, increase team spirit, avoid conflicts?
- What do we learn from the experiences of virtual exchange in research and teaching during the Corona crisis?
In the second half we open up space to discuss your experiences. We touch upon those contexts which are more difficult to switch to virtual communication and on the question of how we can all avoid to return to business as usual after the Corona crisis.
Everyone who is interested to reduce business travel by air by using virtual communication in the work place is very much welcome to join!
(Note: we will not so much focus on big online events or conferences, but on day-to-day remote work in international teams.)
March on Airports

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Oct 02 - 03 2020
- Time: All Day
The Stay Grounded network invites groups internationally to join the French mobilization on October 3rd for a reduction of air traffic and a just transition towards a climate-safe transport system. Let’s take the wave of action beyond French borders!
“Using public money to keep afloat an industry incompatible with the safeguarding of decent living conditions on Earth – our answer is no”, say French Stay Grounded members “Action non violente-COP21” (ANV-COP21) and Alternatiba. They therefore call for a march on airports in family-friendly, non-violent mobilisations, on foot or by bike throughout France.

This webinar is intended as a space of strategic discussion for campaigners and groups working on aviation: Should our campaigns focus on reducing demand through higher prices for aviation by taxing kerosene, tickets, or frequent flyers? Or should we rather push for limits to short haul flights, airport capacity, or even personal flight contingents? Or both?
We want discuss pro‘s and con‘s of taxes and limits, taking into account the implications from a justice perspective, the effects on the climate, and the feasibility of the measures. Which demands are currently, in the Covid-19 situation, the most viable ones?
After some short inputs, there will be time for the participant‘s experiences and perspectives. In case you want to prepare, find summaries of taxes and limits on flights in the report „Degrowth of Aviation“.

Action at Lübeck Airport – Aktion LUFTBLOCK Lübeck

Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Aug 15 - 17 2020
- Time: All Day
Disclaimer: On August 16 and 17 Extinction Rebellion and many others call for an action day against short-haul flights and against the regional Airport in Lübeck, Germany. Stay Grounded is happy to share this activity and supports the resistance countering short-haul flights and the demand to close down regional airports. However, Stay Grounded does not support the actions’ demand for compensation of the airport’s emissions. Offsetting is a false solution – it does not reduce emissions and often leads to ecological and human rights issues.

Artivism Action by Flyglarm Arlanda at Arlanda Airport Stockholm
Local Time
- Timezone: America/Los_Angeles
- Date: Aug 09 - 10 2020
- Time: All Day
Come along and rebuild Arlanda airport in Stockholm (SE) on the 10th of August!
At a time when most people have realized that we are in the middle of a global emergency for the climate and ecosystems, the Swedish government is choosing to expand for increased flying. The future after the corona pandemic is uncertain. Should we jump on the bandwagon again, Klimatkris Airlines, or start adapting the economy to reality and the planet’s boundaries?
Now that the airline industry is in crisis and the airport company Swedavia has lost a lot of money, it will continue to be important to mark the beginning of the expansion of Arlanda and demand that air traffic is not allowed to return to the same high levels as before. We can not stand by and watch as the government continues to favor activities that harm the climate and the environment, but we will mobilize broadly to show that a fourth runway and a major international terminal at Arlanda have no place on a sustainable planet.
We demand that the government interrupts the expansion of Arlanda and instead invests in sustainable transport, so as not to allow air traffic to return to 2019’s high levels. Anyone who cares about the future of the planet is welcome to help. Cancel everything else and fight against the expansion with us on 10th of August 2020.
Do you want to know more about August 10 and how you can help us stop an increased flight from Arlanda? Read more on www.flyglarmarlanda.se and fill in the interest form here.

Ways for shifting towards a climate-just transport system: The role of aviation workers and the state
4th of August, 4-6 pm CEST (find your local time here)
Please register via this link until August 2nd.
Covid-19 grounded the majority of flights. How can this pause of aviation serve to transition towards a climate-just transport system – one that will involve less flights also in the long run? Just Transition is a demand originally developed by trade unions and now widely supported by the climate justice movement. It aims to protect the workers and communities dependent on the industry, while safeguarding the future of workers, communities and the planet. What are the current discussions inside trade unions – how to deal with employees in the current time of crisis? Could jobs be shifted to other sectors? This webinar will discuss how such a transition can be organized in a just way, taking into account the global scale, recognizing the current power balances and also looking into the role of the state and public ownership.
Speakers:
- – Tahir Latif, representing aviation workers in the UK trade union PCS
- – Todd Smith, pilot and active in the newly founded aviation employers group “Destination 1.5”
- – Alethea Warrington, aviation campaigner & part of the Stay Grounded working group on Just Transition
- – Vicente Paolo Yu, from the Third World Network
- – Darío Solano, Director of the environmental organisation Fundación La Negreta and Coordinator of the Dominican Forum of Cultural Tourism

Work-related air travel – like air travel in general – has been on the rise for decades. Even if we are aware of the negative climate impact of flying, it is hard to insist on using only grounded means of transport, if rules, expectations, and time constraints at work put pressure on us to use a plane. Therefore it is important to change the travel policies of the organisations we are part of so it becomes easier for us and more accepted to stay grounded also for work. The corona crisis has shown us that it is much easier than expected to replace plane trips by meeting online. This is a valuable experience that we can build on – to avoid that as soon as travel restrictions are gone, everything goes back to business as usual.
Let’s make good use of the time we have left before this happens and put our organisations – universities, companies, NGOs and other institutions – on a climate friendly course.
This webinar is a good place to start if you are looking for inspirations on how to get there. In this webinar, we will look into concrete measures to reduce air travel that are available to organisations.
- Jens Borken-Kleefeld (Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, Zeroing Flying) will give an overview of available measures
- Kårstein Måseide and Maarten Ipers will share their experience implementing sustainable travel policies at the University Bergen and the Vrije Universiteit Brussels
- Rosa Hofgartner will introduce the initiative ExPlane for bottom-up initiatives at universities
To register for the webinar, please fill in this form. You will get a Zoom-link to access the webinar by mail after having registered. Registration is possible until July 2nd, 12 am (CEST).
Even though this webinar has a focus on academia, all types of organisations can benefit from the knowledge about grounded travel policies that has accumulated in this sector in the past years. You will have the possibility to ask questions and share your own experiences with this topic.

How to use social media for campaigns on climate justice and reducing aviation
9th of June 2020, 4-6pm (CEST)
Please register via this link.
It has become standard even for small NGOs or grassroots groups to run multiple social media channels like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. But very often these are not used effectively, content is posted rather randomly and is not presented in a catchy way, or the social media team does not coordinate properly. What can be done about this?
In this webinar we will mainly focus on the channels Twitter, Facebook and Telegram as well as the online tool Canva. How can we use these as a (small) NGO or grassroots organisation in a purposeful and effective way, which contents make sense and how can they be presented to reach more people and create engagement? What is the Facebook Creator Studio, how can we create engagement on Twitter and what are the benefits of lists and groups there? How can Telegram be used to reach your followers regularly and directly?
We will mainly deal with the technical level of the platforms. Additionally we will explore how graphics can be created and edited quickly using Canva and how a small social media team can coordinate itself.

Manuel Grebenjak, Stay Grounded Online Campaigner
